  • NEW Weekend Black Type Schedule

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Some soft falling rain across Thursday and Friday in Brisbane should see the sting out of the ground for the first of the majors in the Queensland Winter Carnival for 2024 where the track is in the soft range.. The Doomben meeting, which includes six stakes races, is headlined by the Gr1 Doomben 10,000. Also boasting six stakes races, albeit with one on Friday and five on Saturday, is Scone. Meanwhile, at Flemington, where there is a feature Listed double, the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800) which is worth a cool $500,000 but whose real value for the winner is a golden ticket into the Gr1 Lexus Melbourne Cup. Whilst every effort is made to ensure race times (in AET) are accurate, please consult official race cards if certainty is required.

  • NEW The Yarraman Park Numbers Don’t Lie

    Friday, 17th May 2024
“Lies, damn lies and statistics…” is a cliché that’s often trotted out to dispel hard core facts and empirical data. And, yet, as we continue down the mind-boggling path of generative AI, data is rapidly becoming a treasure trove of insights for all business disciplines. At its core, the Black Type Premiership operates on one simple reality: the numbers don’t lie and are what they are. Ahead of the famous Scone Racing Club double-header on Friday and Saturday, the Hunter Valley’s Yarraman Park Stud is entitled to be on cloud nine. With just three stallions on their 2024 roster, including two emerging sires, the odds are firmly against them having all three in the Top 20 of the 2023-24 Australian Black Type Stallion Premiership. And yet, they do. Reigning Black Type Stallion Premier and General Champion Sire I Am Invincible is London to a brick on to take both titles again after claiming Wednesday night’s HTBA Champion Stallion award. With the apple seldom falling far from the tree, Vinnie’s Group 1-winning son Hellbent continues to rocket up the charts, having just celebrated a second individual Group 1 winner, Benedetta, to go with dual Group 1-winning daughter Magic Time. With the likes of Hell Hath No Fury, Fully Lit, Miss Hellfire and Kristilli also making useful contributions at stakes level in recent months, Hellbent is in ninth position. That leaves Japanese-bred stallion Brave Smash. Five Group 1 sprint performances in Australia is a pretty solid foundation for a young stallion, so it’s little surprise that Brave Smash is proving to be up to the challenge. With 32 winners from 58 starters, the son of Tosen Phantom is best known for his daughter Kimochi who leads the Australian Black Type 3YO Premiership and who recently sold for $2.2 million at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale. Sadly, Gr1 Blue Diamond fourth Brave Halo tragically lost his life and we’ll never know just how good he was. All told, there are 285 individual stallions to have sired an Australian stakes performer this season. For one farm to have their only three stallions in the Top 20 is not just a statistical difficulty, it’s a rubber stamp of genuine class.

  • NEW Lovatsville Launches with Melbourne Cup Hero

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Newly minted Victorian stallion station, Lovatsville, which is also standing Royal Meeting, Fierce Impact and Generation, has crowned its official launch with the announcement that it will stand Gr1 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip (Outstrip-Sarvana, by Dubai Destination) this coming season at its Central Victoria-based property for a fee of $8,800 (inc. GST). Also a weight-for-age Gr1 Turnbull Stakes victor, Gold Trip retires having demonstrated immense talent and resilience to compete and perform in the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in back-to-back years for champion trainer Ciaron Maher. He raced as a 2YO in France, before multiple Group 1 performances as a Classic European 3YO where he ran a gallant 4th to Sottass in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, followed by a glittering Australian racing career.” Maher enthused, “He won a Melbourne Cup, was beaten a lip in the Caulfield Cup, was a weight-for-age Turnbull Stakes winner, could have won a Cox Plate and was elite in an Arc. He is a legitimate freak.” Co-purchaser and owner of Gold Trip, Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett revealed the attraction in purchasing him from Europe: “What appealed to us in Gold Trip was his dynamic turn of foot, as we saw in that explosive performance in the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes. There is no doubt in my mind that he was beating the best 2000m field assembled in this country in the last 20 years and he beat them with his head on his chest.” He observed, “Weight-for-age is our measure for the elite, however when he was asked to carry weight in the big handicaps he had the class to do that too and I believe that is a quality that will resonate with breeders looking to breed a genuine racehorse."

  • NEW Gold Trip Pedigree Adds to His Appeal

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Bred by Godolphin, Gold Trip’s sire Outstrip is a northern hemisphere-bred son of recently retired Darley stalwart Exceed and Excel, a solid pointer to where the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes winner has inherited much of his devastating turn of foot. An eliete sprinter-miler, Outstrip raced in the UK, UAE and the United States, winning the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf over a mile as a 2YO to go with placings in the Gr1 Dewhurst Stakes and, as a 3YO, in the Gr1 St. James’ Palace Stakes. Hailing from one of the Aga Khan’s influential French damlines, Gold Trip’s Dubai Destination dam, Sarvana, is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Sarkiyla who placed in France’s Gr1 Prix Jean Romanet and Gr1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Delighted to add Gold Trip to the Lovatsville roster, stud principal Sam White commented, “It is quite rare that the Australasian breeding community get a chance to access horses who have performed so well in an Arc – see below in green silks with white cap – arguably Europe’s premier race. Gold Trip had the versatility to race at the highest level here for multiple seasons, demonstrating his class and toughness, while also displaying obvious speed where he flew past subsequent Cox Plate winner Romantic Warrior in the Turnbull.” White feels that Gold Trips performance, physique and price point will pique the interest of many breeders “At $8,800 he is priced extremely well considering his ability. We want to inject further value into the opportunity by providing very attractive breeding right packages so that Gold Trip’s supporters can access him for the duration of his career for a modest outlay.” Alongside the breeding right packages in Gold Trip, Ciaron Maher Racing, Australian Bloodstock and Gold Trip’s ownership group have committed to supporting the horse at stud, ensuring that he starts his career at stud positively.

  • Jamie Kah Reboot is Proving Quite Remarkable

    Friday, 17th May 2024
If one looks through the Black Type Jockey Premiership for 2022-23, one will be struck by a metaphorical full stop in the career of Jamie Kah. The occasion was Australian Guineas Day where the gifted hoop finished second to Legarto (Proisir) aboard Attrition (Churchill) in the Group 1 feature for 3YOs. Then nothing at all, with her 300 Black Type points frozen until the end of July at the season's conclusion. Having finished ninth the season before, the Champion Melbourne hoop was in a purple patch of form with a dozen stakes performances in just over 2 months from the New Year before her fall, including 6 wins led by victory in the Gr1 Lightning on Coolangatta. That she subsequently still finished fifth in the BT Jockey Premiership despite missing almost 5 months of the feature season was exceptional. History shows that a week after the Guineas, Kah suffered what many expected to be a career-ending, if not life-ending, fall. It might well have been, and yet somehow, she willed her way back into the saddle. Entitled to massive applause for her character, that wasn't enough for Kah. Following many months of rehab, the jockey emerged on the feature scene at Randwick on 19 August last year where she placed at Group level aboard both Zaaki and Estriella. She has not looked back since. On 389 points in third position for the 2023-24 title, Jamie Kah took until 4 November to find her first stakes-winner for the season. To date, that number has now swelled to 26. Amongst her 10 on-the-board Group 1 efforts, half of them were wins including the Blue Diamond, Australian Guineas, Newmarket Handicap and, perhaps most precious of all to her, the South Australian Derby and Goodwood Handicap in her hometown of Adelaide, both in recent weeks. With that kind of chutzpah, Kah is gold medal material personified.

  • Excitement Buzzing for Scone's Cup Carnival

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Scone is an important Hunter Valley town known as 'The Horse Capital of Australia' and is reputedly the third-largest horse breeding area in the world after Kentucky in the US and Newmarket in the UK, reports racingnsw.com.au. Scone's Cup Carnival this Friday and Saturday is NSW country's only stand-alone metropolitan race meeting and is considered the nation's most prestigious two-day country carnival. Attendance over the two days is expected to exceed 6,000 – an extraordinary sign of support with the population of Scone just surpassing 5,000 at the last census. "Scone Racetrack is one of the best in Australia and it's something we all should be proud of – I for one, can't wait for Friday," said Scone Mayor, Upper Hunter Shire Councillor, Maurice Collison. Major sponsor Darley heads into their eighth year of sponsorship at Scone with tickets to the two days the most sought-after ticket in town. Scone Race Club's CEO, Jason Hill added,"The two-day Darley Scone Cup Carnival is the jewel in the crown of country racing in NSW.We've received tremendous support over the years from the industry, our partners, members and the local community." The Darley Scone Cup Carnival features six Stakes races including the Gr3 Coolmore Dark Jewel Classic and nearly $2.5 million in prizemoney with $700,000 in stakes on Scone Cup Day. The following day is the Saturday Stand-Alone 'Metropolitan status' meeting that offers $1.77 million in prizemoney.
  • Kia Ora's Bubble Rock Casts a Bright Shadow

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Purchased from the 2023 Fasig-Tipton November Sale in Kentucky, the Gr2-winning imported mare Bubble Rock (More Than Ready-Reef Point, by Giant's Causeway) will make her Australian debut in the Listed Magic Millions sponsored Bright Shadow (1110m) at Doomben on Saturday sporting the silks of Kia Ora Stud. Knocked down for US$1.5 m (AU$2.33 m), the half-sister to Korea's Champion Sprinter and Champion Miler Blue Chipper (Tiznow) is in the care of Tony Gollan and will jump from barrier 2 with Blake Shinn in the saddle. With earnings just shy of $1m from five wins and seven placed efforts, the mare has recorded victories from 1100m to 1700m, so it would be no surprise to see her aim towards races like the Gr1 Stradbroke (1400m) and the Gr1 Tatts Tiara (1400m) if she comes through her local debut without any issues. While she is yet to win first up, she does have three second placed efforts from four runs and with a recent second in a 1000m Doomben trial, the 5YO should run well first up. Fresh from her first up win in the Listed Hawkesbury Rush, the James Cummings' trained Parisal (Astern-Circular, by Street Cry) has been installed the race favourite. Asked to carry 60kg, just a kilo more than Bubble Rock, the Godolphin bred and raced 4YO is unbeaten at the distance of Saturday's race and with James McDonald sticking strong, there has already been strong betting support for the half-sister to Gr1 Newmarket Handicap winner Cylinder (Exceed And Excel). In the large field of 21 final acceptances there appears to be a myriad of chances with the Gollan trained Typhoon Tavi (I Am Invincible-My Amelia, by Redoute's Choice) coming into the race off three recent wins. Drawn in the outside barrier, jockey Jamie Kah will be sure to give the 5YO every chance.

  • Waller's Third of the Field May Not Be Enough

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Having recorded success in the Gr3 Rough Habit Plate last year with 26/1 chance Special Swey (Sweynesse), Champion trainer C J Waller is hoping that weight in numbers will aid in winning Saturday's race after accepting with seven of the final 21 runners. The China Horse Club, Newgate Farm and partners-raced Tannhauser (Dundeel-Luqyaa, by Exceed And Excel) appears the most fancied of Waller's runners, having most recently been seen on race day when finishing fourth as the favourite in the Gr3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) behind the Gary Portelli-trained Kintyre (Hallowed Crown-Mull Over, by So You Think). Having previously been considered a non-winner, Kintyre progressed from winning the Frank Packer Plate to winning the Gr2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) last start at Eagle Farm. Chasing his third straight win in what appears to be a new found zest for racing, the 3YO gelding has drawn an inside barrier with the Laurel Oak Bloodstock and Goodwood Farm bred runner jumping away from barrier 1 with Cejay Graham in the saddle. While he doesn't often win by far, the half-brother to dual Gr1-winning juvenile Fireburn (Rebel Dane) is sure to look the winner at some stage in the home straight. Becoming the first Group 1 winner for her sire when winning the Gr1 ATC Oaks (2400m) last time out, the P G Moody & K Coleman trained Autumn Angel (The Autumn Sun-Angel Of Mercy, by Hussonet) is in Queensland to chase further riches and Saturday's race looks an excellent starting point for the Arrowfield Stud yearling sale graduate. Drawn wide in barrier 14, the Wylie Dalziel-syndicated Autumn Angel is likely to start the favourite with Jamie Kah in the saddle.
  • Doomben 10,000 Favours the Favourites

    Friday, 17th May 2024
The last three winners of the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 – Giga Kick, Mazu and Eduardo – have all started favourite, and this year's running sees last start Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes third placed I Wish I Win (Savabeel-Make A Wish, by Pins) tackle the race as the short-priced favourite to record his second elite level victory. Standing in his way are eight other runners, five of which have already recorded elite success including the Chris Waller-trained Espiona (Extreme Choice-Dahooil, by O'Reilly). Probably not really handling the Heavy 10 track conditions in the Gr1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) last time out when finishing eight lengths off the winner Magic Time (Hellbent), the Star Thoroughbreds-raced 5YO mare has a devasting turn of foot on her day, but everything needs to go her way. Likely to race handy to the lead, if the Triple Crown owned Mazu (Maurice-Chatelaine, by Flying Spur) can take out to top prize, then he will have done so on two different occasions for two different trainers, having previously won for the P & P Snowden yard, before transferring into the care of Joe Pride. A stablemate to the P G Moody & K Coleman trained race favourite, the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale-bound Chain Of Lightning (Fighting Sun-Magic Art, by Perugino) will be out to add the Doomben 10,000 to her Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes victory two starts back where she defeated Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai-Bella Orfana, by Star Witness) and I Wish I Win into second and third respectively, with both set to line up here.

  • Hoop Confident in Velvet Queen's Belmont Prospects

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Jordan Turner considers handy pick-up ride The Velvet Queen (Universal Ruler-Doubleblack Velvet, by Show A Heart) a genuine chance of scoring a knockout win in Saturday's Gr3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) at Belmont, reports rwwa.com.au. If the Tabtouch market is to be believed, the $200,000 Belmont Sprint is a race in one with Western Empire installed the $1.90 hot favourite in the quality 16-horse field. Western Empire, with a Gr1 Railway Stakes (1600m) victory next to his name, validated top market billing after an imposing win in the Northam Stakes (1300m). The Velvet Queen is aiming for her first stakes success after going close in the Belmont Sprint last year when second to subsequent Railway Stakes champion, Bustler. The Velvet Queen is currently rated a $21 chance in the Belmont Sprint and Turner says if he she runs to her level, she can cause a major surprise. "From what I can remember she was favourite in this race last year, or definitely in the market," Turner said on Tabradio. Turner adds, "I'm looking forward to it and it's definitely one of the best Belmont Sprints that I have seen." With Chris Parnham having tasted success in all seven of The Velvet Queen's wins, Turner gets his first opportunity to sit aboard the mare.
  • Banana Queen Could Give Jewel Rivals the Slip

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Purchased last Thursday at the Inglis Chairman's Sale for $1m by Nick Wakim's Hilldene Farm, the well-bred 5YO Banana Queen (So You Think-Tropicana Lady, by Fastnet Rock) will be out to give her new owners an instant return when she contests Saturday's Gr3 Coolmore Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone. Beaten just under a length and a half in the Gr3 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m), the solid second up record of the mare should see her produce a very forward race for the G Ryan & S Alexiou stable. With many from the Hawkesbury Crown set to tackle this race including the second, third and fourth placed Short Shorts (Iffraaj-Jabot, by Green Perfume), Shadows Of Love (Dissident-Sky Dazzle, by Written Tycoon) and Ghaanati (Deep Impact-Al Anood, by Danehill), luck is sure to play a role in the finish, something that deserted Ghaanati last time out. A winner of the Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes around this time last year, Ciaron Maher's Ruthless Dame (Tavistock-Ruthless Lady, by Keeper) was last seen when finishing less than a length and a half off Zougotcha (Zoustar) in the Gr1 Queen of the Turf Stakes, and if she can cope with the 61kg and barrier 15, the class of this mare could see her capable of being right in the finish.

  • Snitzel Chasing Back to Back Woodlands Prize

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Off the back of Hip Hip Hurrah (Snitzel) winning the Listed Woodlands Stakes at Scone last year, the C J Waller-prepared Lazzura (Snitzel-Laguna Azzurra, by Heart's Cry) looks a leading chance to give her sire consecutive wins in the race. A winner of her only start, the Arrowfield Stud-consigned Lazzura scored narrowly at Kembla Grange on debut as an outsider but is likely to start a lot shorter here behind the race favourite Toque (Street Boss-Gorgons, by Exceed And Excel). Raced by B2B Thoroughbreds, the $500,000 purchased Lazzura comes from the family of Champion Japanese 3YO Colt Kizuna (Deep Impact) and any black-type success will surely add considerable value to the already valuable filly. A winner last start by just less than three lengths at Canterbury, the G Waterhouse & A Bott trained-Toque commenced her career with a third in the RL Wyong Magic Millions race and from barrier one here will likely take up the running and look the winner in the home straight. Based on breeding alone, the Mark Minervini-trained Alideel (Dundeel-Aliberani, by Redoute's Choice) is likely to need further to show her best, but off a recent barrier trial win, the Torryburn Stud-bred filly could sprint well on debut. With the race having proven itself in the past for producing high quality fillies such as multiple Group 1 winner In Secret (I Am Invincible) and the Group 2-winning, Group 1-placed Libertini (I Am Invincible), the form from Saturday's juvenile contest should be followed with interest.

  • McDonald Chasing Further Juvenile Success

    Friday, 17th May 2024
Having already captured this season's Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes with exciting filly Hayasugi (Royal Meeting) as well as the lucrative $1m VOBIS Showdown with debutant Stanley Express (Starspangledbanner), Cranbourne-based Clinton McDonald appears to have another smart 2YO in his stable with the well-bred Angel Capital (Harry Angel-Bahamas, by Teofilo) set to tackle Saturday's Gr2 Spirit Of Boom Classic (1200m) at Doomben. Making his debut recently in a 1000m maiden at his home track, the half-brother to Gr2 winner Berkeley Square (Territories) and Gr3 winner Senor Toba (Toronado) settled last in the field of 11 before flying home late with plenty in hand to win by more than two lengths. Speaking to racing.com during the week, McDonald was effusive in his praise of the colt, stating "He is potentially the best horse we have ever trained… he is a very, very good colt." Bred by David Peacock and sold through the draft of Mill Park Stud for $400,000 at the Inglis Premier sale, the colt will be out to also continue the great run of the South Australian based farm, having sold last Saturday's Gr1 Goodwood Handicap winner Benedetta as a yearling. Expected to head to the Gr2 Sires' Produce Stakes and the Gr1 JJ Atkins Stakes following Saturday's run, McDonald feels the colt will be much better at 3 but is still an exciting proposition for this season. "He has done it over 1000 metres but that's not his go and he will be very good over a mile and that's what we will set him up for. We feel Angel Capital can be a Caulfield Guineas horse."
  • Parmalove Comes Out on Top of Rollercoaster

    Friday, 17th May 2024
A rollercoaster week of emotions for Gus Wigley and the Inglewood Stud team ended on a high on Wednesday night when Parmalove (Snitzel) realised a sale-high $730,000 in the Inglis Digital May (Early) Online Sale. Parmalove, the dam of New Zealand 2YO of The Year-elect Velocious (Written Tycoon) – see below – was at a New Zealand airport early last week ready to fly to Sydney where she was to be one of the stars of The Chairman’s Sale before things took a turn for the worse. “I’d literally checked into my flight, we were all ready to go when the air freight company called and said she’d suffered some minor cuts and abrasions so we decided to stay home and reconsider our options, purely as a precaution’’ Wigley revealed. “I spoke to [Inglis’ Senior Bloodstock Consultant] Brett Gilding and he suggested using the Inglis Digital platform to sell her so we backed his judgment and the result tonight is fantastic. Full credit to Brett and the entire Inglis team to come up with the idea and then to help us implement things and to achieve this great result tonight, it’s the perfect way to top off what’s definitely been a week of mixed emotions.’’ Parmalove, offered in foal to Satono Aladdin, was the centre of some fierce bidding tonight, eventually being sold to Walnut Farm. “It certainly got the heart pumping, it was really exciting and we’re just thrilled with the result,’’ Wigley said. “We’ve gone from a big low to a big high in the space of a little more than a week. Inglis Digital has proven again to be a great option for us here in New Zealand to sell online to the Australian market, we’ll be doing it again for sure. It’s a great outcome.’’
